In Africa Sings, African music is celebrated by blending legacy and tradition. It begins with Angélique Kidjo performing Bella Bellow’s “Senye,” followed by the premiere of Philip Glass’s Three Ifé Songs (composed for Kidjo) with the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. It shifts to American music with Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige in Maurice Peress’s orchestral arrangement, then to Europe for Zemlinsky’s Symphonic Songs, featuring baritone Martin Achrainer and texts by Harlem Renaissance poets.
