Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Mélusine blends five originals and nine interpretations of songs that span the 12th century, sung in French, Occitan, English, and Haitian Creole. The album tells the legend of Mélusine, a woman cursed to become half-snake every Saturday. She marries Raymondin on the condition that he never see her on that day, but he breaks his vow, discovering her secret. In anger, she transforms into a dragon and flies away, returning only when one of her descendants is near death.
